Sara Selene Thornton
“My mission is to bloom, and help others do the same.”
Sara Selene Thornton is an abstract and figurative artist and sculptor based in Bellingham, Washington.
Sara’s work evokes a peaceful coexistence between natural and human-made processes, blending traditional welding skills with found objects; splashes of nature spirits, pagan mythology, Native, and nautical themes.
Thornton’s art connects grace, conscious intention, and a love for metal, minerals, and nature to remind us of the sacred beauty all around us—and in the details.
Originally from Eastern Washington, Sara has spent a lot of time in nature and near the sea; growing up in Hawaii, and also spending time in school in Nevada, before returning to the Pacific Northwest and Bellingham. Thornton’s work invokes the contemplation of soft seascapes, the whimsy of the woods, and the stoic calmness of the desert.
Connecting that which we make, and that which makes us.
Sara’s work symbolically invokes both the temporal and the everlasting. A synthesis of structure and nature-inspired spontaneity, Thornton’s pieces capture the stoic solidity of metal, mineral, and stone, while cradling the undulating grain and details of driftwood; even as vines from the garden are invited to climb and participate in the garden arch or garden meditation space.
”May all of the children believe in their truth and know their worth. May love overcome all wounds to make our greatest dreams a reality.” — Sara Selene Thornton
From personal jewelry to large-scale outdoor works, Sara Thornton’s commissioned pieces live in places small and large; private and public, and can be found adorning sacred space, living rooms, parks, gardens, entryways, boats, docks, meditation rooms, and arts & music festivals across Washington State.
